Primary Role
Responsibilities for this position establishes the day-to-day management of personnel and implementation of drinking water practices and environmental rules and regulations for the Northern IL region to ensure compliance with pertinent state and federal regulations. Subject matter expert for state and federal regulations as they relate to drinking water and wastewater compliance. Maintains liaisons with individuals within and outside of the organization - key regulatory officials and company personnel. Responsible for acting independently on technical and environmental matters.
Key Accountabilities
· Initiates and controls the State drinking water program for the Northern Region of IL, including oversight of all required monitoring and reporting of sample results required under the Safe Drinking Water Act and/or Clean Water Act.
· Assists BD team with the integration of acquisitions.
· Keeps informed about upcoming regulations and prepares the state to be in compliance.
· Ensures that the environmental program requirements are met in accordance with the Environmental Management Plans.
· Main liaison with the Central Lab and 3rd party labs.
· Coordinates resolution of compliance issues with State regulatory personnel and applicable Water Quality and Environmental Compliance staff.
· Makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and have far-reaching impact on environmental activities.
· Assists the state water quality team in reviewing data to proactively advise on operational and capital improvement changes needed to ensure compliance with health-based regulatory limits. May collaborate with other states similarly.
· Assists in reviewing and determining the impact on company activities from existing and proposed regulations at the local, state and federal level.
· Assists with the execution of departmental business plans and contributes to the development of functional strategies.
· Assures that policies, programs, standards of performance and approved objectives related to environmental compliance are adhered to including those involving health and safety, affirmative action, corporate responsibility and labor relations.
Knowledge/Skills
· Knowledge of science, theory and application of water treatment and operations, water quality monitoring and quality assurance programs
· Must possess knowledge of current and emerging environmental issues and environmental regulations impacting water resources and facility operations
· Knowledge of industry trade organizations to include participation in related activities aimed at improving environmental program awareness and stewardship opportunities
· Must understand company goals and objectives, policies, procedures and business plans
Experience/Education
· Bachelors in Science, Chemistry, or Biology preferred or equivalent experience
· A minimum of 5 years experience, depending on the level of the position in environmental management, project planning or other public programs
· Experience in the management of people, processes, technologies and budgets preferred
· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced expertise in Excel
Travel Requirements
· 15% Travel required for meetings and trainings
Certifications & Licenses
· Valid Driver’s License with clean MVR
· Class A Water Operator License and/or Class 1 Wastewater Operator license preferred
