$29.43/hr ($1 shift differential for 3rd shift)

Primary Role

Illinois American Water is seeking a Utility Operator to help execute operations at our 6-8 mgd wastewater treatment plant in Granite City. In this role, you will learn all aspects of the treatment facility including lab testing, operating, identifying maintenance needs, and more. The ideal candidate will have a good mechanical aptitude, be able to work independently, and possess strong time management and communication skills.

 

*Shift/Schedule: Days Tues-Thurs and Friday/Saturday nights. 

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and ensuring reliable operations of the Granite City Wastewater Plant facilities. Operator duties include operation of the SCADA controls for plant operation and monitoring. While not operating, maintenance duties include receiving and testing of chemical deliveries, general maintenance duties of the treatment facilities and outlying stations, housekeeping, and other duties as assigned by management. The utility operator must also maintain the ability to work as a Filter Plant Operator, Operator Leadman, and Laboratory Technician. The utility operator must be able to fill vacancies and perform normal and /or extra duty in these classifications as required to maintain proper plant operations in addition to their normal daily duties.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Good mechanical skills
  • SCADA operation
  • Clear understanding of plant operation, a strong work ethic, time management, communication, and organizational and team membership skills
  • Clear understanding of plant operation and pumping station operation including pumps and chemical feed systems and adjustment
  • Valid state driver's license
  • Position requires the ability to lift 75 lbs.
  • Computer literacy required

Experience/Education

  • 0-2 years in wastewater industry
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Chemistry, science, and mechanical subjects are highly desirable

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current American Water Employees hired before March 11,2024 are not required to have an IEPA certification, but it is highly encouraged to obtain one
  • Employees hired after March 11,2024 are required by Article 12 section 5 to obtain an IEPA license in accordance with the timeframes outlined in the CBA.

Work Schedule

  • 7am -3pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 11pm Friday to 7am Saturday. 11pm Saturday to 7am Sunday
  • Schedule changes will be handled according to language as outlined in the CBA
