Primary Role

The Sr. Manager, Strategic Finance leads integrated financial modeling and analysis for long-range plans, strategic scenarios, and key business decisions. Working across the organization, this role aligns assumptions, evaluates financial impacts, and delivers clear recommendations to senior leadership.

Posted range is $101,760-170,050

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain integrated three-statement financial models—linking the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement—to support long-range planning and business decisions.
  • Partner with internal and third-party stakeholders to collect and validate financial and operational inputs, align assumptions, review scenarios, and resolve differences.
  • Develop scenarios and sensitivity analyses for capital investments, regulatory outcomes, financing strategies, operations, mergers and acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Own the outer plan years of the annual planning process, consolidating cross-functional inputs and aligning results with long-range financial objectives.
  • Evaluate impacts on earnings, cash flow, rate base, capital structure, credit metrics, affordability, and other key measures.
  • Prepare and present executive-level materials that summarize scenarios, financial impacts, risks, trade-offs, and recommendations for senior leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Support the corporate goal-setting process and monitor quarterly progress against established goals by coordinating updates and highlighting key risks and areas requiring leadership attention.
  • Maintain model governance through documented assumptions, data validation, version control, and review protocols.
  • May want to mention something about preparing executive and board level materials that summarize the scenarios.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of integrated three-statement modeling, including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, debt, capital, and supporting schedules.
  • Strong skills in forecasting, scenario analysis, valuation, and financial statement analysis.
  • Ability to build trusted cross-functional partnerships, validate inputs constructively, and drive stakeholder alignment.
  • Strong facilitation, written communication, and presentation skills for operational, finance, and executive audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint.

Work Environment

  • Professional office environment
  • Hybrid work schedule: three days in the office and two days remote.
  • This position allows the flexibility to be based in in American Water reporting location.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a related field; MBA, CPA, CMA, or CFA preferred.
  • Seven or more years of progressive experience in strategic finance, corporate finance, FP&A, financial modeling, investment banking, transaction advisory, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience owning and maintaining integrated three-statement financial models.
  • Regulated utility experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience with rate base, regulatory frameworks, capital programs, financing, and utility financial drivers.

Travel Requirements

  • As necessary, up to 10%.
