Primary Role

Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, responsible for maintenance and repair of California American Water’s distribution system.

Duties include: locating, repairing, and replacing water mains and all associated components, providing excellent customer service during customer inquiries and/or service leaks, and ensuring compliance with water quality regulations through sampling and system flushing procedures. Must be available for on-call and emergency duty as needed.

Key Accountabilities

  • Requires daily walking and/or climbing on varied terrain.
  • May require bending, stooping, kneeling, and digging with equipment. Lifting up to 50 pounds unaided may be required.
  • Approximately 20 – 30% of the position is sedentary, either in the office or in a company vehicle.
  • May require the physical ability to perform labor-intensive activities such as digging, moving equipment, and working long hours in emergency situations.
  • Position has potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and requires use of appropriate safety equipment.
  • A substantial portion of the work is done outside with exposure to the elements, some potential exposure to poison oak insects, reptiles, and animals.
  • May require working in trenches, tanks, and/or elevated areas.
  • Position requires the ability to work with little direct on-site supervision.
  • Team project work may be required.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Requires ability to communicate verbally and in writing with internal and external customers as well as the ability to accurately read and record meter readings and other related information and perform basic mathematical calculations.

Experience/Education

  • This position requires a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of water system construction, distribution or plumbing background is desirable.
  • Able to read and understand water distribution system maps.
  • Must possess a Grade 2 Distribution Operator Certification.

Other

The position requires a valid California Class C Driver’s license with minimal moving violations.

Compensation

This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.

  • Union per CBA starting hourly rate is $28.39. This rate will increase to $31.00 at 6 months of service.
