Job Description: 

Primary Role

Assists the operator in the safe operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant. This position works a rotating schedule shift (7a-7p and 7p-7a).

Key Accountabilities

  • Assists the operator in making all necessary water treatment control tests and calculations to control water treatment and pumpage to provide potable water necessary to meet system demands. Replaces the operator during vacations, sickness, or other absences.
  • Unloads and handles chemicals, sets manual chemical adjustments, and performs maintenance and required cleaning.
  • Reads and interprets all charts, gauges, graphs and other devices (SCADA) normally used in operating a water treatment facility.
  • Maintains, repairs and installs mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, motors, switchgear, storage tanks, compressors, intake screens, chemical feed equipment and other maintenance work.
  • Works with maintenance personnel in the repair and installation of equipment as required.
  • Makes inspection trips to the pumping and treatment facilities and reports on plant conditions; makes corrections as required by conditions.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of the operation of all motors, pumps, switchgear, screens, chemical feed equipment and other equipment as necessary to meet the changing demand of the distribution system and related water treatment plant facilities.
  • Excellent math, basic hydraulics, and technical skills.
  • Able to distinguish colors.
  • Background in maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical, electrical and related equipment.
  • Experience in water treatment plant or related field preferred. 

Experience/Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Continuing education as needed for Operator certification renewal. 

Certifications & Licenses

  • Once any individual is hired into or awarded an Assistant Operator/Maintenance Rotating position, he or she must take and pass the appropriate state certification examination for Class A Water License within 24 months, and apply for certification within 6 months of achieving the minimum experience requirement for certification, if he or she had not already met the minimum experience requirement upon passing the certification test.
  • Required to possess and maintain a drivers license valid in the state of their residence.
  • A DOT physical is required for this role.

Work Environment

  • Environmental conditions including contact with water, chemicals, fumes, odors and dust as a result of working with and handling potentially hazardous water treatment and laboratory chemicals.
  • Minimum exposure to inclement weather mostly of short duration 
  • Position may be subject to mandatory off hours call-out and overtime.
