Health & Safety Specialist in Pacific Grove, CA 


Posted Range: 

$28.80/hour to $45.45/hour


The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for assisting in planning, organizing, providing training and overseeing components of the California American Water’s Safety Management System. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, company policies and procedures, promoting a culture of safety within the organization, and implementing effective safety management practices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conducts safety compliance audits and inspections at company facilities and job sites to identify hazards or risks, assessing those risks, recommend and oversee the successful implementation of corrective actions.

  • Investigate workplace incidents to include observations and reported hazards through the Hazard Identification Program to determine root causes and safety corrective actions to mitigate future risks.

  • Lead emergency response planning and preparedness efforts, including conducting drills and refresher training for staff.

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and review of the Safety Management System program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements that foster a safe working environment for all employees.

  • Assists in the development and implementation and independently delivers H&S training and monitoring safety performance metrics to drive continuous improvement in safety initiatives.

  • Stays up to date with local, state, and federal H&S regulations, ensuring the organization remains compliant and collaborates with various departments to provide support in H&S policies and promoting safe best practices.

  • Act as a resource for employees regarding safety-related inquiries and observations providing guidance, coaching, and support.

  • Closely partners with operations and production teams locally.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices, including OSHA regulations, risk assessment methodologies, and safety training techniques.
  • In addition, familiarity with the health and safety analysis process in hazard identification, evaluation, and control, as well as emergency response planning.

Experience/Education

  • Associates degree and higher (desired) or equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years directly applicable experience.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current and valid safety certification(s) preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass motor vehicle background check.
