The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Primary Role
Key Accountabilities
- Support strategic delivery of American Water’s safety performance by building a robust oversight and monitoring program and establishing appropriate mechanisms and metrics.
- Support and drive continuous improvement of American Water’s safety management systems and compliance with safety regulations.
- Support and guide State Operations leaders on appropriate corrective actions for recommendations or action plans from IH reports.
- Administer and function as SME for the IH qualitative and quantitative assessment database, and provide necessary review, analysis, approval, and reporting of IH evaluations.
- Proactively assess data from Occupational Toxicology research and independently published sources to communicate/implement actions to ensure the health and safety of operations staff.
- Participate in engineering reviews to address Industrial Hygiene and employee exposure control.
- Assist with complex IH control solutions and risk management for sites and projects.
- Audit and assess industrial hygiene programs for compliance and improvement.
- Monitor emerging health and safety legislation and IH technologies and adjust IH programs, standards, and controls to ensure compliance.
Knowledge/Skills
- Knowledge of OSHA, Federal, State and Local regulations as applicable utilities, construction, and related industries.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with health and safety program management and OSHA regulatory requirements for construction and general industry with increased opportunities to apply expertise across disciplines or organizational areas.
- Knowledge of water and or wastewater utility industry strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations.
- Knowledge of Department of Transportation regulations.
- Strong process, project, and program management skills.
- Proven ability to lead through influence and deliver results through others.
- Ability to be both visionary and strategic in thinking, as well as tactical in executing training strategies while anticipating and considering how the business may be impacted by training initiatives.

Experience/Education
- 8+ years of related experience.
- Bachelor's degree in safety management, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational environment health and safety, or a related field.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Equivalent role-related work experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
Travel Requirements
30% as required
Certifications & Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License
- At least one relevant/related nationally recognized professional certification like Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) strongly preferred.
