Primary Role
To maintain, install and repair plant equipment and operate plant associated facilities.
Schedule: Wednesday - Sunday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Key Accountabilities
- Troubleshoot, install, operate, maintain, inspect, repair, and perform preventive maintenance duties on the equipment at the Water Purification Plants and groundwater treatment systems; including but not limited to pumps, blowers, motors, chemical feed equipment, screens, mixers, filters, flow meters, gauges, valves, washwater processing equipment and related instrumentation and control equipment.
- Calibrate and adjust chemical feed and process equipment including instrumentation and control systems.
- Monitor the water purification plants / groundwater systems and make adjustments as necessary to control their operations.
- Perform sampling, testing, and laboratory analysis to monitor process and determine compliance with Federal, State and Pennsylvania American Water’s standards.
- Perform necessary emergency operating procedures and take proper corrective action for continuous effective operation of the water purification plants / groundwater systems.
- Maintain all necessary records, tools and work equipment.
- Perform maintenance and custodial duties at production facilities.
- Perform light construction projects as needed, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, masonry, etc.
- Specify and initiate orders for parts and supplies.
- Assume duties of plant operator in the absence of the operator as needed.
- Delivery, loading, unloading and placing into storage water treatment plant chemicals, including chemical receiving and inventory.
- Maintain grounds, buildings, roadways, screens, reservoirs and right-of-ways.
- Position is subject to 24 hour call-out and overtime.
Knowledge/Skills
- Two years experience in the water/wastewater maintenance field or other applicable mechanical/electrical experience.
- Mechanical ability sufficient to understand the operation of pumps, valves, motors and other mechanical equipment related to plant operation and maintenance.
- Ability to obtain Waterworks Operators Certificate (Plant Specific) within one to three years, depending on class.
- Knowledge of basic scientific and water purification concepts.
- Must possess a valid PA driver’s license with the ability to pass a motor vehicle check..
- Communicate in an effective manner both oral and written with the general public and company personnel. Read and understand instructions, safety rules, etc.
- Required mathematical skills sufficient to be able to calculate dosages, surface areas, volumes, weights, measures and algebraic formulas.
- Change easily and frequently from job tasks.
- Use good personal judgment and specialized knowledge when handling situations and interactions.
- The ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and control systems by using specialized testing equipment is preferred.
Experience/Education
- Prior experience operating & maintaining equipment in an industrial setting is preferred.
- Prior water treatment experience is desirable.
- High School graduate or state recognized education equivalency certificate required.
- Technical college course work and/or degree in electrical, electronics or applicable engineering curriculum is desirable.

Physical Requirements:
- Capable of lifting and/or carrying 50 lbs. or more on a frequent basis. Walking up and down stairs. Working in confined areas. Ability to wear a respirator.
- Ability to respond to 24/7 callout and have the ability to respond to emergencies within an hour.
- Work under adverse environmental conditions including contact with water, chemicals, fumes, odors and dust as a result of working with and handling potentially hazardous treatment and laboratory chemicals while using appropriate PPE. Exposure to inclement weather mostly of short duration.
- Ability to comply with the Company's attendance and code of conduct policies.
