Primary Role

Performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance of wastewater collection and plant systems. Assists other technicians with performing maintenance work. Participates in the operation, maintenance, control, and repair of all related plant process equipment including pumps, motors, valves, sewer line, on-line equipment, and chemical feeds to ensure treated water meets County, State and EPA quality standards. Make equipment adjustments, lubrications, and minor repairs and reports equipment problems. Performs housekeeping duties in compliance with NPDES Storm Water permit, OSHA rule and Best Management Practice Program (BMP), and keeps all facilities clean and neat. Assists Plant Superintendent with operational process controls. Performs duties to ensure plant and collection system operational properly including inspecting, troubleshooting, and improving wastewater treatment facilities and all equipment.

Key Accountabilities

  •  Reports on unusual conditions to management with recommendations for correction.  Completes tasks assigned by the Plant Superintendent in a timely manner.
  •  Works flexible schedule to fill-in for technicians as needed.
  •  Continues as stand-by technician and is on-call for emergency situations for situations such as sewage spills, sewer line blockage, customer claims, storm water runoff, power failures, chemical leakages, etc.
  •  Assists in managing work schedules and coordinates with on-duty operators.  Takes work orders and completes them on time.
  •  Prepares CM and PM in an internet based CMM system for all the tasks performed.  Processes invoices through JDE and P-Card statements.
  •  Take charge of purchasing small equipment, parts, and maintenance supplies.  Attends monthly tailgate meetings.
  •  May be trained and provide assistance with operations and lab process control analysis, as well as train others for pump station emergencies and routine maintenance tasks.
  •  Maintains timecards, recording hours spent to complete tasks.
  •  Performs other work as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills

  •  Knowledge of the basic mechanic, pump, motor, and pump station automatic control system, basic wastewater treatment facilities and collection system operational methods, practices, techniques, and servicing requirements.
  •  Knowledge of OSHA rules and safety practices in the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment used in facilities.
  •  Knowledge of procedures, materials, tools, equipment and safety hazards and precautions common to assigned areas of responsibility.
  •  Ability to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external customers as well as the general public.
  •  Ability to determine what equipment, tools, labor, and materials will be needed to complete assigned projects.
  •  Ability to use both hand tools and power tools.
  •  Ability to exercise independent judgment in maintenance and repair duties and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal associates, supervisory personnel, management personnel, contractor, and vendors.
  •  Ability to install, maintain and trouble shoot gauges, recording devices, and general plant instrumentation.   Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance records.
  •  Ability to write legibly and make simple mathematical calculations accurately.   Ability to lift and move up to 70 pounds.
  •  Ability to stand, bend, stoop, shovel, sweep, walk and climb.
  •  Ability to perform works in a registered confined space with PPE and proper safety procedures.   Ability to operate company motor vehicles and equipment.
  •  Ability to work outdoors under all weather conditions including summer heat.
  • Ability to use computer tools and SCADA system to analyze and report facility and lift station data
     

Experience/Education

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Electronic Technician Training

Certifications/Licenses

  • Requires valid HI Driver's license with excellent driving record.
  • Required to obtain and maintain an electrician's license within 3-4 years from hire date. American Water will provide the required training.

Work Environment

  • Potential for exposure to dust, pollen, chemicals, water, and sewage

Other Requirements

  • Position is subject to call back, overtime and weekend/holiday call outs.

  • Monday-Friday, 6am-2:30pm
  • On-call rotating schedule
