Primary Role

Supports the Director of Business Development in the pursuit of new business opportunities, including the acquisition of water and wastewater utilities, and the management of economic development opportunities requiring significant capital investment.
 

Key Accountabilities

  • Participate in due diligence efforts for acquisition of water and wastewater utilities, including gathering and reviewing technical information, conducting site visits and system assessments, developing operations/capital budgets, and preparing regulatory filings. (30%)
  • Lead a cross-function team to coordinate the review and planning process for delivery of capital assets to support economic development opportunities driven by government and economic development organizations (30%)
  • Assist in building the business development pipeline and identifying target opportunities to maintain a steady flow of projects and plans for securing those in line with the business plan. Identify, qualify and prioritize leads through the use of appropriate tools, local market data and active targeted prospecting. (15%)
  • Develop, shape & track potential opportunities and match service and product offerings with customer needs. Make personal contacts to develop candidates for potential acquisitions. Recommends initial service offerings to create commercially viable solutions to meet customer needs (15%)
  • Participate in public and non-public meetings, conferences, seminars, etc., involving municipalities or their associations, economic development organizations and water/wastewater utilities to promote company growth and branding. (5%)
  • Provide support to external affairs team in developing communications materials relating to regulatory and technical developments, new technologies and current trends as they affect the water and wastewater utility industry (5%)
     

Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong teamwork skills.
  • Strong project management skills (e.g., planning, organizing, coordinating). 
  • Ability to interact with governmental agencies, consultants and the general public with effective skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills (e.g., presentation, listening, report writing).
  • Strong interpersonal skills (tact/diplomacy, persuasion, cooperation and ability to motivate others).
  • Computer literacy (Competent in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, GIS).
  • Financial analysis skill, including budget preparation and basic accounting knowledge.
  • A thorough understanding of water and wastewater operations, planning, design, construction, and project management. 
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements.

Experience/Education

  • Total experience of around 12 years in Engineering and Business Development. 
  • Three to five years of business development related experience.
  • Prior experience in industries related to engineering or technical services or operations of utilities, preferably with water or wastewater utilities.    
  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Civil / Mechanical Engineering or related field.
     

Certifications and Licenses

  • Active State Driver's License required with the ability to pass a motor vehicle report. 

Work Environment

  • Standard office environment.
