Primary Role
The Sr. Instructor, Operations Training is responsible for developing, delivering, and managing comprehensive hands-on training programs for water and wastewater professionals throughout the American Water footprint. This role involves leading the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of operational training programs across the organization, ensuring compliance, and enhancing operational skills and competencies. This individual will be working with one or more states.
Key Accountabilities
- Deliver a comprehensive standard operational training program, including the implementation of new-hire and on-going compliance programs, manuals, and supporting material across all levels of operations.
- Select local resources (both internal employees and external vendors) to develop and deliver training in an effective and efficient manner.
- Facilitate learning programs (classroom, virtual, hands on) creating a comfortable, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for discovery, discussion, and collaboration as needed to support the interstate program manager.
- Continuously seek and support new approaches, practices, and processes to improve the efficiency and efficacy of the training services offered.
- Advise local management and regional operations training management on the status of each operating subsidiary’s compliance with laws and regulations through detailed reports.
- Manage the implementation of standards, targets, policies, and plans to ensure continuing and increasing operational efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability.
- Ensure that operational integrity (quality, environment, reliability, health, safety, security, etc.) is maintained.
Knowledge/Skills
- Advanced knowledge of current effective adult learning or development methods, incorporating experience of performing needs assessments, evaluation, and post training assessment.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe, and video creation software is strongly desired.
- Knowledge of adult learning theory and/or instructional technology, curriculum development, research and data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- High level understanding of T&D, Production, Field Service, Wastewater workflow process.
- Knowledge of company and regulatory compliance procedures related to health and safety and environmental.
- Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS).
- Strong process, project, and program management skills.
- Ability to communicate and transfer knowledge and skills to employees.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations).
- Demonstrates ability to effectively solve routine and non-routine issues, developing possible solutions to problems and challenges.
- Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting).
- Ability to be both visionary and strategic in thinking, as well as tactical in executing training strategies while anticipating and considering how the business may be impacted by training initiatives.
- Strong quantitative skills (e.g., analytical, technical, problem solving, mechanical).
- Leadership presence (e.g., ability to deal effectively and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders).
- Organization Skills (e.g. time management, facility/training logistics, personnel management, materials management, etc.).
Experience/Education
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Relevant experience in lieu of degree may be considered.
- 5+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree or 11+ years’ experience without a bachelor’s degree of relevant industry experience.
- Advanced facilitation experience in hands-on, classroom, and virtual training settings.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License.
- OSHA 10, 30 or advanced certification desired.
- DEP license (water/wastewater) desired.
Work Environment
- May have to work with shift workers outside of normal business hours.
- May occasionally work in construction environments, near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and could include a work environment where possible exposure to physical hazards, noise exposure, weather extremes, wet and/or humid conditions and chemicals exist.
- The ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
Travel Requirements
Up to 20%, as required.
