Job Description: 

Primary Role

To direct and perform a variety of tasks to assist in the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection,and appearance of all pipelines, services hydrants, valves, and other appurtenances within the distribution system.To initiate or discontinue service to the customer's home or establishment following written or oral instructions. To install and remove water meters in the customer's home or establishment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Consistently performs work assigned by supervisor, collects, compiles and records word data.
  • Frequently directs a crew or assigns field work to Utility Person and service person.
  • Frequently completes company reports related to work of Utility Person and service person.
  • Consistently locates appropriate valves at customer's home or establishment and turns valves to permit flow or discontinuance of water using various hand tools.
  • Consistently breaks up pavement using pavement breakers, pry bars, shovels, picks and other hand tools to dig excavations preparatory to removing and or repairing pipe.
  • Occasionally records meter readings.
  • Occasionally investigates customer complaints.
  • Occasionally inspects meters, valves, hydrants, and pipes to detect defects such as leaks or malfunctioning meters.
  • Consistently tightens pipe connections to prevent leaks using wrenches and various hand tools.
  • Occasionally communicates with customer.
  • Frequently disconnects and connects water meter to outlet and inlet couplings using assorted hand tools.
  • Consistently uses miscellaneous equipment including but not limited to pry bars, shovels, picks, hand tools, and valve keys.
  • Frequently backfills, tamps, and installs temporary paving using assorted hand tools.
  • Frequently ensures job site is secure prior to leaving.
  • Frequently determines appropriate materials pipe sections, valves, and fittings needed to perform assigned work.
  • Frequently performs cutting, threading, brazing, soldering, and connecting or adjoining pipe and fittings as required.
  • Occasionally drives company vehicles as required
  • Occasionally installs taps as required.
  • Occasionally installs or removes shoring systems as required.
  • Consistently follows established safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience/Education

  • A minimum of 3 years experience working under the direct supervision of foreman
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Certifications/Licenses

  • Must obtain/maintain D.O.T certification
  • A valid driver's license is required

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and isfrequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations.
  • Employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electric shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is loud requiring hearing protection.

Schedule/Hours

  • Full-time.
  • Employee will train on day shift, Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm
  • Regular schedule may include evening shifts (5pm-1am)
  • Weekend coverage includes: Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday
  • Shift varies in days and hours. Details of the schedule will be explained during the interview process.
