Shift/Hours

  • Must be available to work the follow schedule. 

    • Monday - Friday 8 AM - 4 PM. 
    • Must be flexible and willing to work some Saturdays. 
    • Potential for overtime.

Primary Role

Position exists to read water consumption meters, recording volumes used by residential and commercial customers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform all functions of the position in a safe and conscientious manner, with constant regard for the safety of fellow employees and the general public.
  • Walks or drives vehicle over established route and takes readings of meter dials manually and also works with hand held devices and computers to obtain readings. May walk up to 7 miles in a day.
  • Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections.
  • Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuation, if known.
  • Receives assignments via computer technology and must record data into assigned computer.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate information to customers, clients, and other employees.
  • Meter readers are required to regularly stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Will frequently use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and stoop, kneel, crouch, or drawl.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and talk or hear.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Meter readers will perform other duties as assigned which may include field service work and work in the transmission and distribution of water service.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Must have basic geographical knowledge of company's service area and must be adaptable to variations in topography and weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of company policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Basic computer skills.

Experience/Education

  • Able to operate company equipment and vehicles necessary for completion of assigned responsibilities.
  • High School Diploma/GED; ability to read and comprehend instructions and effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers, clients and other employees.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass motor vehicle background check.
