Position Information

Posted Range: $31.36/hour

This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.

Primary Role

The Laborer assists in the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection, and appearance of all pipelines, services hydrants, valves, and other appurtenances within the distribution system.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assists in locating appropriate valves at customer's home or establishment and turns valves to permit flow or discontinuance of water using various hand tools.
  • Breaks up pavement using pavement breakers, pry bars, shovels, picks and other hand tools to dig excavations preparatory to removing and or repairing pipe.
  • Tightens pipe connections to prevent leaks using wrenches and various hand tools. Uses miscellaneous equipment including but not limited to pry bars, shovels, picks, hand tools, and valve keys. Backfills, tamps, and installs temporary paving using assorted hand tools.
  • Ensures job site is secure prior to leaving.
  • Performs cutting, threading, brazing, soldering, and connecting or adjoining pipe and fittings as required. 
  • Drives Company vehicles as required.
  • Installs taps; installs or removes shoring systems as required.
  • Changes meters found to be stopped or defective.
  • Miscellaneous work such as washing vehicles, painting, mowing, etc.
  • Follows established safety guidelines and procedures. 

Experience/Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Successful completing of 1 month on the job training.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Valid drivers license is required.
  • CDL Class A preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain DOT medical certification.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechnical aprts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud requiring hearing protection.
