Primary Role
Safely drives, operates, and maintains assigned excavation equipment.
Key Accountabilities
- Drives or is responsible for loading assigned equipment for transport to and from the job site.
- Operates equipment in a safe manner to make required street openings, trenches, backfilling.
- Cleans, greases, inspects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to the equipment and or equipment accessories or attachments.
- Maintains a properly equipped vehicle which may include DOT DVIR inspections.
- When not operating the equipment, the Equipment Operator shall perform work as a Utility Person as described in the Utility Person job description (attached).
- Performs other duties as assigned by a Supervisor.
Knowledge/Skills
- Must have basic geographical knowledge of company's service area and working knowledge of company policies, procedures and safety practices as well as regulations regarding confined spaces.
- Must demonstrate a working knowledge of safety policies, such as operating the equipment around other persons and excavating near other underground facilities.
- Ability to operate company equipment and vehicles necessary for completion of assigned responsibilities.
- General knowledge of safe practices for operation and maintenance of underground utilities, including worksite safety.
- Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the One-Call system and must be able to identify other utilities location markings.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities as outlined in the Utility job description (attached).
Experience/Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- 2-3 years of heavy equipment operating experience preferred.
Certifications/Licenses
- Must successfully complete an equipment operating training program as required by the company.
- Individuals hired into or awarded a Utility Equipment Operator position, must take and pass the appropriate state certification examination for Class E Water Distribution License within 24 months, and apply for certification within 6 months of achieving the minimum experience requirement for certification, if he or she had not already met the minimum experience requirement upon passing the certification test.
Work Environment
- Must be adaptable to variations in topography and weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift and maneuver equipment and materials of varying weights up to 100 lbs.
Other
- Position may be subject to mandatory off hours call-out and overtime.
- Required to possess and maintain a drivers license valid in the state of their residence.
- Will be required to complete and maintain forms needed for a driver qualification file.
- Will be required to obtain a DOT medical card.
