Primary Role

The Senior Accountant of Financial Reporting & SOX Compliance will play a key role in compiling and drafting financial statements and disclosures for the Company’s periodic SEC filings (i.e. Forms 10-K, 10-Q), as well as other external financial reports and releases (i.e. subsidiary financial statements).  The position is also responsible for the monthly financial consolidation process and assisting with SOX compliance requirements for the Company. The role will frequently collaborate with various departments across the Company, including Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Investor Relations, Regulatory and SEC General Counsel.

Key Accountabilities

  • Draft disclosures and compile financial statements for various sections of the Company’s SEC filings (i.e. Form 10-Q and 10-K), ensuring compliance with US GAAP and SEC rules and regulations. Maintains complete and accurate supporting documentation for disclosures. 
  • Assist with monthly financial consolidation process as part of the accounting period close.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of the Company’s annual and quarterly subsidiary financial statement reports
  • Participate in the annual audits (both the consolidated and subsidiary audits) through coordination with the external auditors.
  • Perform technical research of US GAAP and SEC rules to support complete and accurate financial reporting; includes preparation of GAAP/SEC disclosure checklist. 
  • Support special projects and initiatives to optimize the effectiveness of existing business applications, technologies and systems and to build efficiencies/improvements into current business processes.  Work on ad-hoc projects within department, as needed.
  • Assist with monitoring the Company’s compliance with SOX activities to ensure key business processes and risks are addressed with an effective internal control environment
  • Collaborate with external/internal auditors to resolve potential control issues. 

Knowledge/Skills

  •  
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting rules and regulations are necessary.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls, risk assessment and SOX related activities
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), with a particular expertise in advanced Microsoft Excel functionalities (i.e. pivot and look-up tables, etc.).
  • Knowledge and prior experience working with SAP (ERP) and Hyperion (Consolidation) are a plus.
  • Ability to innovate and adapt new technology to improve efficiency in the accounting department
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with proven ability to interact effectively with upper management and external professionals (i.e. auditors).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to effectively work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, team building and decision making.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of relevant accounting or auditing experience required
  • Knowledge and experience with SEC reporting required (i.e – can include experience auditing publicly-traded companies)
  • Prior public accounting (“Big 4”) and/or large, multi-subsidiary company experience a strong preference
  • Prior experience working in the utility industry and knowledge of regulatory accounting a plus

Certifications & Licenses

  • CPA, or prospective CPA, is a plus
