Job Title:  Senior, Engineering Project Manager

Job Description: 

Primary Role

The Senior, Engineering Project Manager is responsible for executing detailed engineering design including interpreting data, understanding end user requirements, preparing calculations and design documents, determining permitting requirements and preparing permit application packages, and providing technical support during construction, commissioning and initial operation of medium complexity capital investment projects addressing water and wastewater treatment, pumping, and conveyance facilities. Supervise internal technical resources and external consulting firms on assigned projects. Also, serve as a technical resource in water and wastewater facility engineering to support the planning and delivery of assets and Company operations. Further, for assets within assigned area of expertise, contribute to the development of technical standards, standard specifications, policies and procedures, and approved product/vendor lists; maintain industry and trade association contacts and lists of showcase or representative projects; and provide consultancy and project level support, all in support of overall operational excellence and engineering center of excellence initiatives within American Water.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct evaluations and inspections of water and wastewater facilities to identify capital improvements necessary to reliably meet future service needs via existing or proposed treatment facilities. Develop design concepts for design of new or expansion/renovation of existing treatment facilities.
  • Prepare, or manage via third party consulting firms, the preparation of technical, permitting, bidding, and contractual documents associated with delivery of assigned capital investment projects. Oversee scope and quality of work to achieve the intent of all design concepts and Company standards for capacity, performance, reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.  Serve as technical resource during construction, commissioning, and initial operation of assets.
  • Develop proficiency in matters within assigned discipline, including technical design, maintenance, asset management and operations.
  • Contribute to the development of Engineering Standards, specifications, and equipment manufacturer recommendations to support initiatives established by the Engineering Directors.
  • Participate in special assignments including professional conferences, business development, technology research and other matters of strategic interest to the Company.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering design theory and practice
  • Familiarity with project management, water resources, water/ wastewater facilities and utility maintenance and operations.
  • Knowledge of current technology and trends in area of expertise and for water quality and treatment and other aspects of the regulated and non- regulated water industry.
  • Familiarity with CAD drafting procedures and technical specification preparation. 
  • Sound business acumen and judgment.
  • Effective quantitative and analytical skills; attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills (e.g., report writing, listening, and presentation).
  • Strong interpersonal skills (e.g., tact/diplomacy, persuasion, team building, cooperation, leadership, ability to motivate others.

Experience/Education

  • 6+ years’ experience in water resources engineering and/or planning; consideration will be given for advanced degrees in lieu of minimum years of experience.  Experience with local site plan approval and state environmental permitting processes is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • EIT or PMP Preferred

Travel Requirements

Periodic travel with overnight stays required; generally, less than 10% of total time is anticipated away from office

Work Environment

Primarily office with occasional local / overnight work in the field.  Up to 2 days work from home permitted per week
