Position Information

Posted Range:
$98,800 - $165,100
The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Primary Role
The Principal, Business Development Valuation Strategies will be responsible for overseeing the valuation strategies of water and wastewater utility assets, providing expert guidance, and managing complex financial analyses. This role requires a deep understanding of the water and wastewater utility industry and asset valuation methodologies. This role will collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to ensure accurate, data-driven decision-making that supports the growth efforts of the company.
Key Accountabilities
- Deliver high-quality asset valuations, market analyses, and strategic recommendations for both public and private sector systems.
- Analyze and assess water and wastewater utility operations, including capital projects, operating costs, and asset life cycles.
- Develop and implement innovative valuation methodologies and best practices to meet evolving industry standards.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for providing expert guidance on utility valuation issues, industry trends, and regulatory impacts.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with AW State Leadership Teams and external consultants.
- Lead and manage cross-functional projects to support utility acquisitions, mergers, divestitures, and other financial transactions.
Knowledge/Skills
- Strong knowledge of water and wastewater utility operations, regulatory frameworks, and industry standards.
- Familiarity with asset management software and valuation tools (e.g., MS Excel, GIS, specialized utility valuation software).
- Strong understanding of public policy and regulations surrounding water and wastewater utilities.
- Strong financial and business acumen.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations. Ability to present complex technical data to non-technical audiences).
- Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting).
- Leadership presence (e.g., Demonstrated ability to lead teams, mentor professionals, and manage complex, multi-disciplinary projects with the ability to meet deadlines.).
- Strong project and change management skills (e.g. planning, organizing, directing, monitoring and reporting on project activities, managing concurrent projects).
Experience/Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required.
- 15+ years of experience in utility valuation, asset management, financial analysis, or a related field
- 5+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License.

- This is an individual contributor role.
Work Environment
- Standard indoor office environment.
Travel Requirements
- Up to 25%, as required.
