Primary Role

This full-time (40-hour per week) internship experience will introduce you to the exciting career opportunities in the water and wastewater field. We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Facilities & Safety Intern to join our team.

Key Accountabilities

  • This internship offers hands-on experience in managing building operations and supporting workplace safety initiatives within the water utility industry.
  • The intern will assist in maintaining a safe, efficient, and compliant work environment for employees and visitors.
  • Utilize Facilities space planning software and work order ticketing system to coordinate, track and fulfill facilities related requests.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Typical duties are diverse and designed around the education and experience level of the student.
  • Assignments may include: Assist with daily facilities operations, including maintenance requests, vendor coordination, and office space management;
  • Support safety programs by helping with inspections, audits, and compliance documentation;
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and update safety signage and materials;
  • Monitor building systems (HVAC, lighting, security) and report issues promptly;
  • Help maintain records for safety training, incident reports, and regulatory compliance;
  • Contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency projects;
  • Provide administrative support for facilities and safety-related projects.

Education & Experience

  • Facilities Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Architecture, Project Management, Operations Management, Construction Management, Sustainability, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of completed coursework

Compensation Data

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. The expected pay range for this position is between $18.00 per hour and $28.00 per hour. If you are hired at American Water your compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, candidate's program year, discipline, and degree.
