Job Details

Salary Range: $124,800 - $140,000

 

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Primary Role

This position is accountable and responsible for the comprehensive development, direction and administration of matters dealing with WQ Compliance and Health & Safety programs across a designated region of the Military Services Group and Contract Services Group as applicable to the region. Make decisions and recommendations for implementation that impact Water Quality and Health & Safety programs, practices and policies. Initiate and maintain relationships with key officials at the bases and company personnel. Execute departmental business plans and contribute to the development of functional strategies. Provide feedback to MSG management for applicable policies and regulations. This position will have a dotted line/ functional reporting to Sr. Director H&S and VP, WQ & Compliance at Corporate.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop MSG/CSG business units’ Water Quality and Environmental programs, and management plans that ensure company compliance with regulatory and corporate standards and adherence to measurement and reporting schedules, in collaboration with the Corporate WQ & Compliance function.
  • Develop MSG/CSG business units’ Health & Safety programs that ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and corporate standards, designed to achieve positive outcomes and compliance, in collaboration with the Corporate Health& Safety function.
  • Continually review Water Quality and Environmental regulations, Health & Safety regulations, and provide input to the local, state and federal regulatory process and ensure that programs are in place to ensure compliance.
  • Track permits related to operations of the business.
  • Oversee work of field staff and advises other company employees regarding operations with potential to impact water quality, public health, environmental compliance, and health and safety.
  • Establish robust processes to ensure consistent application of all environmental compliance and health and safety program requirements and ensure associated management control and reporting systems are in place to track status.
  • Provide input to Local and Senior management on water quality, public health, environmental and health and safety matters.
  • Provide technical assistance to the functional units on Water Quality, Environmental, and Health & Safety issues.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance with business development opportunities and new business proposals.
  • Leads the establishment of the Environmental and Health & Safety programs at new acquisitions and integrates new sites into operations.
  • Ensure the consistent implementation and application of enabling technologies in support of the environmental and health and safety programs.

  • Identify and develop opportunities to enhance the company’s brand through the development of innovative and sustainable environmental solutions.
  • Identify and develop reference projects for social responsibly, stewardship and related natural resource programs.
  • Develop and manage functional budget for MSG.
  • Oversee and direct company programs to address security of sources, facilities, and customers against water quality and other environmental threats.
  • Oversee and direct business unit programs to address physical security program requirements at all operating locations.
  • Assist with the development of cross-connection and backflow prevention programs.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of water/wastewater operations and water quality monitoring and quality assurance programs.
  • Knowledge of government regulations related to water quality and employee/community safety.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging environmental issues.
  • Knowledge of state and federal occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging health and safety issues in the water/wastewater industry.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations impacting water resources and facility operations.
  • Knowledge of industry trade organizations to include participation in related activities aimed at improving environmental compliance and health and safety
  • Strategic approach to developing long-term Environmental and Health & Safety program goals and objectives, developing plans to achieve the goals, and  monitoring the progress
  • Effective use of environmental recycling and disposal technology to improve facility operations.
  • Ability to articulate complex issues both verbally, and in writing to both technical and non-technical people.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to lead and assist in the resolution of complex regulatory compliance issues.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to proactive environmental activities, practices and standards, supporting the company’s environmental and sustainability goals.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Environmental Science or equivalent.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Role related work experience may be considered in lieu of a college degree.
  • A minimum of Fifteen (15) years of experience in environmental management of water resources and/or treatment or related technology or process development, and/or health and safety program management in water, wastewater, or related industry.
  • Experience in the management of people and budgets; development of plans and strategies.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Professional certifications in Environmental Compliance, Health & Safety, and/or risk management preferred.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Travel Requirements

50% over a broad geographic area.

Work Environment

  • Office and field.
  • In addition to American Water’s pre-employment screenings, this position may require the ability to pass a Department of Defense background check for access to the military installation.

Other

  • Maintain systems in a manner acceptable to AW Standards and in accordance with EPA and State environmental agencies, ensuring no NOVs.
  • Compliance with all state and federal health and safety regulations, with goal of zero injuries to company employees, contractors or customers.
  • Communicate Environmental and Health and Safety requirements to Directors, Managers, Supervisors and front-line employees.
  • Lead by example with displaying "can do" attitude at all times.
  • Handle elevated customer complaints and issues related to water quality and environmental compliance
