Primary Role

This is an entry level position working primarily out of the Raritan- Millstone Water Treatment Plant(RMWTP). A System Operator I maintains the operational integrity of the Central operating area by dispatching production from the Raritan-Millstone and Canal Road Water Treatment Plants (RMWTP and CRWTP). The system operator also controls the output from the various wells and booster stations located throughout the distribution system to maintain adequate storage and pressure. This position generates and maintains production and allocation reports for management use on a daily basis. On occasion a System Operator may be asked to operate remotely from other company facilities. This position works a shift schedule (days/afternoons/midnights/relief shift) which includes working weekends and holidays and includes mandatory overtime.

Key Accountabilities

  • Daily Operational activities to be performed include, but are not limited to Operation of the Central operating area production facilities in compliance with local, state and federal regulations Operates SCADA systems to facilitate cost-effective delivery of drinking water.
  • Monitoring and Operating remote facilities such as tanks, wells, SOS/interconnections and booster stations.
  • Record keeping,
  • System Reports.
  • Management of work orders using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) from work order inception through completion.
  • Operation of communication equipment such as telephones, 2 way radios and cell/smart phones.
  • Communications with supervisors and other field employees to resolve or report any unsafe conditions, abnormal conditions or security concerns.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Company policies, procedures, and safety practices applicable to area of responsibility, as well as federal and state regulations regarding safe drinking water operations
  • Must pass a System Operator evaluation prior to the end of the probationary period with a minimum score of 80%.
  • In order for progression to a System Operator II classification, an employee must possess a T-1 license, pass a qualification exam with a score of at least 80%, and have a minimum of 24 months experience as a System Operator I.

Experience/Education

  • High School or equivalency (G.E.D.) diploma.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at all times while working in this position. The loss of driving privileges must be reported to management immediately.
  • If a successful bidder does not possess a license upon entering the position the employee will be granted up to three (3) years to obtain a NJ DEP T-1 license.
  • Once obtained the license must be maintained through re- certifications.

Work Environment

  • Shift work which includes working holidays and weekends.
  • Mandatory overtime is a requirement of this classification.
  • Must remain at position until relieved by another trained System Operator or Supervisor.
  • Must verbally convey operating conditions/status and special instructions to other employees, when being relieved or at shift change.
  • Must record any supervisor instructions, operating notes or pertinent job information clearly and legibly into the control room operating log book.
  • Must adhere to company dress code.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical requirements for the position.
  • Physical requirements include, but are not limited to being able to stand for long periods of time, walk, climb stairs, and sit in a chair for extended periods.
  • Must be able to identify and distinguish between the colors red, yellow, green and magenta.

Travel Requirements

  • May be required to travel to other facilities to operate SCADA systems from other company locations.
  • Travel may be required for meetings or to attend training.

Other

  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand.
  • Able to perform basic mathematical, algebraic and statistical calculations (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, solving for an unknown and averaging) using a scientific calculator.
  • Proficient in the use of a computer and associated software programs such as but not limited to Excel, Word, Outlook and Lotus Notes.
  • Able to make operational decisions/adjustments based upon information gathered via distributed control systems (SCADA) and observation of system conditions.
  • Interactions with customers through phone calls after hours.
  • Interaction with One-Call notification system and follow-up communications with company employees.
  • Customer service focused.
