Maryland American Water is seeking a Full-Time Meter Reader! If you have experience with reading utility meters and are seeking to begin your career in the water utility industry, then this role is for YOU! Apply TODAY for immediate consideration!

Position Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of meter function, meter reading and repair, Broad working knowledge of distribution system components, including their installation, such as valves, hydrants, tapping devices and various types of pipe materials.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required with experience in water distribution systems. 

Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Key Accountabilities

  • Test and Repair Meters. 
  • Uploads, downloads meter routes, and produces edit reports. 
  • Reads Meters. 
  • Maintains stock and meter supply room. 
  • Maintains a properly equipped vehicle. 
  • Performs service person duties. 
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor.  

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before the customers of the organization. 

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Active state driver's license required with the ability to pass a motor vehicle report.
  • Must be able to obtain temporary Class II Maryland Operators License within 120 days.
  • Class II Maryland Operator’s license must be obtained within 120 days of hire and maintained.
