Primary Role
Safely drives, operates, and maintains the Backhoe.
Key Accountabilities
- Drives the backhoe to the job site. Operates in a safe manner to make required street openings, trenches, backfilling. Performs loading and unloading of excavated material from a work site.
- Cleans, greases,and makes minor repairs to the backhoe. When not operating the backhoe, the Backhoe Operator shall work as a Utility Person and performs the following skills: inspects, operates, maintains, troubleshoots,installs and repairs water distribution and wastewater collection system facilities including not limited to a) water mains, valves, hydrants and service lines; 2) sewer lines, manholes and service laterals; and 3) pumping and flow control facilities.
- Responds to customer service inquiries including service disruptions, service line problems and grinder pump malfunctions. Investigates complaint and determines corrective action per company procedure.
- Performs new service activities including tap installation and recordkeeping.
- Monitors plant operations, as needed, water distribution and wastewater collection systems, and make adjustments as directed to control operations.
- Operates and maintains plant process equipment as directed.
- Completes all necessary forms, sketches, and field notes and uses maps and records.
- Maintains tools and work equipment.
- Performs maintenance and light construction duties including repairs and/or improvements to physical plant, custodial duties and related building and grounds activities.
- Performs facility mark-out pursuant to Pennsylvania One-Call.
- Performs other duties which may be assigned by a Water Company supervisor.
Knowledge/Skills
- Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the One-Call system and must be able to identify other utilities location markings.
- Must demonstrate a working knowledge of safety issues, such as operating the backhoe around other persons and excavating near other underground facilities
- Physically able to operate the backhoe safely and efficiently, both on and off the road.
- Able to operate both ends of the backhoe efficiently for the purpose of digging, loading, and cleaning up a job site.
- Able to operate the backhoe in a safe and efficient manner in various positions, such as on hills and various angles.
- Must be familiar with safe excavation and proper trenching and shoring procedures.
Experience/Education
- GED/High School Diploma
Work Environment
- Monday - Friday 7:30am-3:30pm
- Position is subject to 24 hour call-out and overtime
Certifications/Licenses
- PA DOT Certification required. MUST HAVE CLASS A CDL.
- Must have a valid PA Driver's license.
- Willing to obtain a DEP Class E within 2 years
