Position Information
Posted Range: $37.06 p/h
This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.

Primary Role
The Sewer Operator-Mechanic I may be assigned to perform any responsibility at Company owned sewer treatment, pumping and collection facilities. based on experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training.
Key Accountabilities
- Operates and performs preventative and corrective maintenance of wastewater treatment and sewer collection facilities and related appurtenances including, but not limited to, chemical feeders, pumps, filtration and purification units, mains, manholes, cleanouts, laterals and standby generation and residual processing equipment to ensure the safe, reliable wastewater treatment and production of the highest effluent water quality.
- Performs and/or assists with repairs to and maintenance of equipment and facilities such as chemical feed pumps, piping, blowers, waste handling pumps and modifications, cleaning and painting of equipment and structures, machinery lubrication, pump adjustment, equipment analysis and data collection related to vibration, temperature, electrical readings, and analytical water testing equipment. Performs and/or assists with clearing stoppages in main line and home sewer connections, repairing broken sewer lines and laterals and installing new sewer pipe and appurtenances. Locates and marks out assets. Inspects manholes and enters main sewers and inserts cleaning and inspection equipment. Operates sewer rodding, sewer dragging equipment, jetting equipment, video equipment for both preventative maintenance and emergency response. Oversees, guides and inspects the work performed by contractors.
- Reviews, monitors, and adjusts hydraulic, biological and chemical processes to achieve and maintain established wastewater effluent quality standards and system requirements. Operates and adjusts computer control systems to ensure the integrity of remote treatment facilities and collection systems and hydraulic, biological and chemical processes. Prioritizes and coordinates tasks and/or activities required for the efficient and reliable operation of wastewater treatment and collection facilities and related appurtenances. Receives chemicals and materials in accord with established company, State, and/or Federal safety standards and/or practices. Maintains the appearance of remote wastewater treatment, collection and pumping facilities and grounds in accord with company standards. Prepares and maintains accurate facility and system records and reports.
- Collects water and wastewater samples, as directed and in accord with established water quality procedures. Performs wastewater treatment tests and evaluates tests results, as directed, to ensure effluent water quality is within the established parameters and, if necessary, adjusts treatment process to ensure the integrity of the effluent water quality.
- Responds to inquiries accurately and professionally and, when necessary, involves the appropriate individual(s) to resolve customer and company-related issues and to achieve the highest level of customer service in all areas of assigned responsibilities.
- Assists with site preparation for various construction and repair projects. Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
- Work conscientiously and be aware of safety hazards. Detect faulty operations, defective material and report those and any unusual situations to proper supervision.
- Available for 24hr response including alarms, customer concerns, overflows, blockages and emergencies in the sewer collection and treatment systems.
- Maintain accurate records for gasoline, mileage, timesheets, expenses, etc.
- Project a positive image to operators, clients, regulatory agencies, engineers, etc.
Knowledge/Skills
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel
- Working knowledge of all aspects of wastewater treatment and collection operations including hydraulic, chemical, and electrical equipment and processes in addition to a thorough understanding of the collection system network including, but not limited to, basins, capacities, interconnections, mapping, service territory and facility locations, to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the wastewater treatment facility, collection network and related appurtenances.
- Working knowledge of mechanical/ electrical systems such as pumps (centrifugal, air operated, etc.), piping, backflow preventors and motors, variable frequency drives, motor control centers, power supply systems, etc. Must be capable of interpreting diagrams, blueprints, schematics and maps and possess a working knowledge of sewer dynamics, pumping stations and backflow preventors. Ability to read and follow equipment O&M manuals and standard operating procedures.
- Must be capable of operating equipment and vehicles necessary for the completion of assignments and must possess and maintain a valid CDL, Class B Drivers’ License, and Tanker (N) endorsement or ability to attain all within one year.
- The individual will also be required to pass an initial and annual OSHA medical examination and must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical requirements for Sewer Operator-Mechanic.
- Working knowledge of company policies, procedures, and safety practice as well as state and federal rules and regulations applicable to area of responsibility including, but not limited to, NJDEP, EPA and OSHA.
Experience/Education
- High School Graduation of Equivalent. Post high school technical and/or administrative course work a plus
Certificate and Licenses
- Required to pass an entrance examination and qualification examinations developed by the company at established intervals.
- CDL with tanker endorsement.
- SOMM III candidate must Obtain NJDEP Wastewater Treatment (S2) and Collection (C2) licenses and demonstrate proficiency.
- Must obtain S1, C1 licenses in 3 years and S2, C2 licenses in 5 years from date of hire.
Travel Requirements
- Daily local travel to and from Company facilities and related locations is required.
Work Environment
- Field environment, both indoors and outdoors. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, etc.
- Bending or stooping, extended periods of walking.
- Exposure to all weather conditions.
- Operate landscape equipment, operate power washer, confined space entry, chemical handling, etc.
