Primary Role
To operate, control, repair and maintain, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operating manuals, and manufacturer’s specifications, machinery, and mechanical equipment used to process water treatment equipment using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring and testing instruments. Operate the water treatment plant when needed including but not limited to vacations & illnesses both short term and long term.
Operate, clean and maintain sludge dewatering equipment.
Key Accountabilities
- Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
- Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
- Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
- Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements, using rules, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
- Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments using various electronic meters not limited to non-contact amp meters, multimeters, calibration meters, voltage detectors, and hand tools
- Repairs or replaces defective parts, using hand and power tools.
- Starts devices to test their performance.
- Lubricates and cleans parts and equipment.
- May set up and operate drill press, grinder, and other metal working tools to make repairs or repair parts.
- Acquire materials and parts for repairs to machinery to maintain orderly operation of plant and processes.
- Repair, install, and perform preventive testing of electrical equipment.
- Repair, install, and perform preventive testing of process control equipment.
- Maintain records, drawings, and reports within area of responsibility using computerize maintenance management software.
- Perform treatment plant operator duties including sampling, testing, adjusting chemical feeds needed for plant operation.
- Accurately perform distribution system sampling and testing.
- Operate and maintain sludge dewatering equipment.
- Compliance with all safety programs, not limited to process safety, confined space entry, lock out tag out, fall protection, arc flash.
- Use of company technology to perform assigned duties.
- Responsible for environmental compliance with DEP and other government agencies and company regulations.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies, practices and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge/Skills
- Must possess and maintain a valid PA driver’s license.
- Applicant will obtain Pennsylvania Operator Certification within allotted time frames set forth in the bargaining agreement.
- Must be able to operate a forklift safely and maintain their operating license.
- Skillfully use hand & power tools or machines needed for your work.
- Read blueprints or drawings needed to make repairs or troubleshoot problems.
- Measure, cut or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.
- Use arithmetic to figure calibrations or tolerances needed to repair or fine tune equipment.
- Accept responsibility for the accuracy of the work as it is turned out.
- Differentiate between colors.
- Read and understand instructions, safety rules, state/federal regulations, etc.
- Ability to acquire knowledge to perform simple procedures and techniques related to the water industry.
- Write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Speak with poise, voice control and confidence using correct English and well modulated voice.
- Starting, stopping, controlling, and adjusting the progress of machines, chemical feeders or equipment. Operating devices involves setting up and adjusting the machines as needed. Controlling involves observing progress of operations and tuning devices to regulate reactions of apparatus.
- Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to: Calculate surface, volume, weights and measures. Calculate square roots, variable formulas. Calculate plane and solid figures circumference, area and volume.
- Compile, gather, collate or classify information about date, people or things using data analytics/reporting.
Physical Demands: Lifting 80 lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Stooping. Kneeling. Crouching. Crawling. Reaching. Handling. Fingering. Feeling. Seeing. Walking up and down flights of stairs. Working in confined areas. Climbing up and down ladders both fixed and portable. Work on a ladder.
Environmental Conditions: Both: inside and outside: a job is considered “both” if the activities occur inside or outside in approximately equal amounts. Ability to wear a respirator and work in confined spaces.
Experience/Education
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Two years experience working in electrical, mechanical, and/or process instrumentation and equipment
- Continuing Education: Company, state, federal, private, or county sponsored courses will be attended to improve job skills. Applicant will obtain Pennsylvania Operator Certification within allotted time frames set forth in the bargaining agreement.
